ESolar to Develop Modular Molten Salt Technology for CSP

ESolar finally elaborated on the project it has underway with Babcock & Wilcox. The two companies will use $10.8 million in funding to build and test modular plant components, including a molten salt receiver, a molten salt-to-steam heat exchanger and a molten salt storage system.

BrightSource raised $150M from in a round led by Alstom, the French energy company, which invested $55 million. Other investors included the California State Teachers Retirement System. Existing investors VantagePoint Venture Partners, Morgan Stanley and Draper Fisher Jurvetson also participated in the round. Overall the company has raised more than $300 million in equity funding.

PG&E, NRG Energy Decide To Use Solar Panels, instead of eSolar’s CSP Technology

PG&E utility said that it has revised a power contract with NRG Energy to use solar panels instead of solar-thermal technology for a 92 MW solar farm planned north of Los Angeles.

eSolar Partners with Ferrostaal

eSolar and Ferrostaal AG have set a partnership to build renewable power stations in markets such as Spain, South Africa and United Arab Emirates. Under the new partnership, eSolar will supply the solar field and receiver technology, while Ferrostaal will provide power turbines and act as general contractor. It will also manage financing activities of projects.

Areva acquires Ausra Solar

Ausra Solar designs and manufactures equipment such as solar collectors and steam generator utilized in solar thermal power plants deploying Compact Linear Fresnel Reflector (CLFR) technology. Ausra was acquired by Paris based Areva in February 2010 for an undisclosed amount.

eSolar signs 2GW Licensing Agreement with Chinese Penglai Electric

eSolar and Penglai Electric announced a master licensing agreement to build at least 2 GW of solar thermal power plants in China over the next 10 years. The construction of the first 92 megawatts (MW) will begin in mid 2010.

John Van Scoter is the New CEO

eSolar, announced the appointment of John Van Scoter as Chief Executive Officer. Van Scoter brings 25 years of experience in the development and implementation of global market strategies for emerging technologies.

John will replace Bill Gross as CEO. Bill who is also a co-founder and a investor will continue serving as Chairman of eSolar.

eSolar partners with Clean Energy Solution

eSolar said it granted South African company Clean Energy Solutions exclusive rights to represent and distribute eSolar’s concentrating solar power technology across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The companies did not disclose the financial terms of the agreement or how much solar power they plan to develop.

Siemens acquires Solel for $418M

Siemens, a German conglomerate acquired Solel – a Israeli solar thermal company. The acquisition would enable Siemens to offer end to end solar thermal power plant development capabilities. Siemens already provides steam turbine engines for solar thermal plants.

The other companies which made an offer to acquire Solel included Housing Alstom and Construction of Israel, and Areva.

Solel had revenues of $90 million in the first six months of 2009. Siemens paid $418 million for the transaction. Under the terms of deal, the company would continue to be headquartered in Israel.

Solel had presence in solar thermal markets including Spain and the US. In Spain alone, it had supplied key components for 15 solar thermal plants with a combined capacity of 750 MW. Solel had about 500 employees. The company is headquartered in Beit Shemesh, Israel.

Acme plans to beat eSolar on cost of solar thermal in India

India’s Acme Group said it’s on schedule to commission part of its first 10-megawatt solar thermal plant using technology licensed from eSolar in Rajasthan in the first quarter of next year. And Acme, which paid $30 million for a 5-percent stake in Pasadena, Calif.-based eSolar in March, thinks it can achieve even better costs than eSolar, which commissioned its first commercial demonstration plant
